Cervical Cancer Overview

Cervical cancer begins in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It is strongly linked to persistent infection with high-risk HPV types.

Because of cervical screening programmes, many cases are detected early, and screening can identify pre-cancerous changes before cancer develops. Earlier diagnosis is linked with better treatment outcomes.

Quick Facts

  • Starts in the cervix
  • Most cases are linked to high-risk HPV infection
  • Screening can detect cell changes before cancer develops
  • HPV vaccination helps reduce risk
Remember

Regular cervical screening and HPV vaccination are important ways to reduce the risk of cervical cancer. Attending screening appointments and seeking medical advice for symptoms are key steps in prevention and early detection.
